A multi-stakeholder alliance for verified journalism

The Global Alliance for Media Authentication and Cooperation (GAMAC) is a decentralized alliance of media organizations, cultural entities and technical communities. Our purpose is practical: anchor a global Root of Trust for media authenticity so that, in an age of synthetic media, real journalists and the audiences they serve can find each other.

Why an alliance, not a platform

Authentication infrastructure becomes dangerous when it is controlled by one company, one government or one algorithm: a single point of failure becomes a single point of control over who is allowed to be heard. GAMAC is therefore built as a multi-stakeholder commons. The same verification standard that protects a correspondent in Geneva must protect one in Nairobi, Jakarta or Lima — and no member should be able to unilaterally decide who is silenced.

Who governs it

Media organizations

Newsrooms, journalists' associations and media-development bodies define professional issuance standards and vouch for the journalists they credential.

Cultural entities

Cultural and educational institutions ensure the system protects linguistic and cultural diversity rather than flattening it into a single data model.

Technical communities

Open-source developers, security researchers and standards bodies build, audit and stress-test the cryptography, the hardware and the interoperability layers.

Governance principles

Distributed authority

Issuance, verification standards and revocation are governed collectively. No single member — including ICO — holds a veto over who counts as a verified journalist.

Radical transparency

Verification results and the public registry are open to inspection; governance rules and audit findings are published, not kept behind closed doors.

Interoperability by design

The credential is built to inter-operate across borders and alongside open content-provenance standards, so trust does not stop at any platform's walled garden.

Privacy by default

Only professional identity data is published. Personal data stays minimal, and credential holders can have records revoked without exposing private information.

Relationship with the International Communication Organization

GAMAC was initiated by the International Communication Organization (ICO), a United States-registered non-governmental organization. ICO serves as the alliance's secretariat: it provides the initial technical protocol (ICOPC), legal scaffolding and operational support. By design, however, GAMAC is not an ICO membership programme. The alliance is open to independent media organizations, cultural entities and technical communities, and the verification standards are intended to be co-governed by the membership rather than imposed by any single founder.

Founding phase — invitations open. GAMAC is launching in 2026 and is actively inviting founding members. We do not list members we do not have: as of launch, no external organizations have yet been formally enrolled, and every name on this site will correspond to a real, confirmed member. Membership is free of charge.
